Pups bring comfort and connection to aged care residents

Our team’s two resident Chiweenie pups (a Chihuahua–Dachshund cross), Decy (7.5 months old) and Mali (3 years old), have been creating special moments and memories for residents over the past several months.
Each day, Decy and Mali do the rounds alongside our personal carers, saying good morning to residents and helping everyone start their day on a positive note. From there, they take part in a range of activities, acting as much-loved companions and friends to all.
Whether it’s joining a resident for a morning walk to get them outdoors and active, or curling up for an afternoon nap on someone’s lap, Decy and Mali are always there, whatever the hour, whatever the need.
Our residents are also treated to regular visits from Honey, Poodle and Mischief, three cheeky Chihuahua cross pups who are always ready for a play and a cuddle.
We know how cherished the puppy program is, so our team makes sure that any resident who needs a little extra support can have a puppy companion by their side. Residents have enjoyed live concerts with Decy and Mali, excursions, and just about every activity on offer, helping them stay active, healthy, and, just as importantly, connected to our BlueCare community.
Our dogs bring a real sense of familiarity and comfort to many of our residents. For those who may feel lonely or receive fewer visits from family and friends, their impact can be life-changing in meaningful ways. The unconditional love and affection they offer has also been incredibly rewarding for our team, who have felt the positive impact just as much as our residents.
We are one big family here at BlueCare Yarrabee, and Decy and Mali are a very important part of that. Having them with us is never a burden, always a pleasure.
Dogs have an incredible impact on both our residents and staff. They bring constant joy and comfort, and they remind every resident that they are loved and part of a caring community.
The program continues to grow and thrive at our BlueCare Yarrabee home, and we hope to see even more animal companions joining BlueCare communities across Queensland, wherever a four-legged friend is needed.
